A legendary Jazz Age hotel reimagined

Completed in 1917, The Sutherland Hotel was one of several elegant Bronzeville apartment hotels designed by architect Henry Newhouse. The extravagance of Newhouse's design is evident today in the lobby's elaborate plaster detailing and grand wall murals, which are original elements that were unearthed and fully restored as part of the 2012 renovation.

The Sutherland Hotel rose to international prominence in the 1950's when its first floor jazz club, The Sutherland Show Lounge, attracted the most talented jazz performers of the era as both performers and patrons. The list of notable artists who played and stayed at The Sutherland Hotel include Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Redd Foxx, Sarah Vaughn, and Joe Williams. In the decades following the 1960's, The Sutherland Hotel fell into disrepair and many of its historic elements, including the Sutherland Show Lounge, were lost.

During it's 2012 transformation into a luxury apartment building, many of the original elements in the lobby and corridors were repaired and restored, modern amenities were added, and the units were opened up to take full advantage of the unique city views. Throughout the renovation, The Sutherland Hotel's importance in the jazz era served as a design inspiration. Playful patterns evoking musical rhythms were integrated into floors, walls, and ceilings-paying homage to the building's rich history and preserving its character for the future.

A historical landmark gets a new coat of plaster

Del Prado is one of the oldest and largest of Hyde Park's fashionable apartment hotels. Built in 1918, the building's "H" shape allows for each unit to have maximum window access- ensuring bright, airy interiors. Originally designed in classic revival style, Del Prado has both ornate Beaux Arts and streamlined Art Deco characteristics- and reflects strongly original owner Sherman "Tecumseh" Cooper's fascination with Native American cultures. Highly detailed plaster and terra cotta ornamentation, intricate balustrades on the grand staircase and promenades, and decorative grilles are a few of the copious architectural elements that brandish the Native American motif. Common spaces wrapped in richly striated marble harken to the natural landscapes of the Midwest.

Renowned for its luxury and ideal locale on the lake and overlooking the park, The Hotel Del Prado attracted many famous visitors, including Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Joe Dimaggio.

With reverence for the original design and as well as an appreciation for contemporary lifestyles, Del Prado's 21st century renovation encompasses the complete restoration of the original architectural details as well as the addition of state-of-the art amenities including the fitness center, universal wi-fi, and a variety of elegant study areas and lounges.

Re-designed units have modern open floor plans to maximize natural light and circulation, and feature high-end finishes such as maple cabinetry, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances.

Building on its flavorful history, today's Del Prado uniquely combines rich layers of the past with the sleek sophistication of the present.
