Completed in 1917, The Sutherland Hotel was one of several elegant Bronzeville apartment hotels designed by architect Henry Newhouse. The extravagance of Newhouse's design is evident today in the lobby's elaborate plaster detailing and grand wall murals, which are original elements that were unearthed and fully restored as part of the 2012 renovation.

The Sutherland Hotel rose to international prominence in the 1950's when its first floor jazz club, The Sutherland Show Lounge, attracted the most talented jazz performers of the era as both performers and patrons. The list of notable artists who played and stayed at The Sutherland Hotel include Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Redd Foxx, Sarah Vaughn, and Joe Williams. In the decades following the 1960's, The Sutherland Hotel fell into disrepair and many of its historic elements, including the Sutherland Show Lounge, were lost.

During it's 2012 transformation into a luxury apartment building, many of the original elements in the lobby and corridors were repaired and restored, modern amenities were added, and the units were opened up to take full advantage of the unique city views. Throughout the renovation, The Sutherland Hotel's importance in the jazz era served as a design inspiration. Playful patterns evoking musical rhythms were integrated into floors, walls, and ceilings-paying homage to the building's rich history and preserving its character for the future.
